Audience feedback and Final Screening

  • What did you think was particularly successful about our film?
  • What would you change?
  • Who do you think the target audience is? Do you think we are reaching out target audience? Please comment.
  • Where do you think you would find a film like ours? (websites, cinema, TV, etc)
  • What do you about the performance of both actresses?
  • Do you think that the message of despair is brought across clearly?

Above is the version of our short film which we showed at our second screening. This version has the addition of the credits, title, music, voiceovers, effects and is also shorter in length than our original rough cut. We decided not to include our old iFlooky logo (from our AS opening) because we felt it didn't suit the sombre mood of our film; alternatively we used a simple spaced out font to show the seriousness of our short film. The title 'Bringing Back Hope' was created using using the 'Light Rays' video effect which began at 0 at the start and then was increased to create the blurring effect and finally a fade video transition was used to flow into the next scene.
The music for both the beginning and ending of our short film was a choice between Gymnopedie No 1 (which we found was copyrighted by Erik Satie), Feather Waltz and Sovereign. All three pieces of music (found on Incompetech) are on piano which we thought suited our film well-the piano can be used as an emotional device to bring across sorrow. Feather Waltz is a very calming song, which we initially thought could be used for the transitions into the flashback scenes but decided it didn't quite suit. This left us with our final choice of Sovereign which we thought suited our film perfectly.

  1. This is Asher! :)

    1. The shot-reverse-shot was done really well, and the over the shoulder shot when she is writing in her diary. The flashback were also a really good element to the film.

    2. As a lead on to the following question, the flashbacks should all have the same effect on them so we know that they are all flashbacks. Also, even though the shot-reverse-shot was good, there is a slight delay between dialogue, so the conversation does not flow.

    3. I think the target audience are teenagers, because the main character is a teenager and the audience will be able to relate, so yes i don't think you were reaching out to your target audience.

4, I think you would find a film like yours on the TV and in the cinema. I think it would also be found on the internet on sites like youtube.

    5. I thought the performance by both actresses were very good.

    6. I think the message of despair is brought across very clearly.

  2. 1. The camera work is excellent; good variation of shots and constructed meaning effectively (for example, the high angle shots when Tosin's character was grieving for her sister in the bedroom - it really captivated her vulnerability). Well done!

    2. I think the flashbacks were good, but I think the variation in colour is confusing, so I definitely think you should consider making them all the same colour. I personally think you should make them all black & white because that looked good and signifies the past more explicitly.
Similarly, I think the shot-reverse-shot was executed brilliantly, but there's a delay between dialogue, making it look scripted rather than spontaneous - so tighten up the editing there.

    3. I think the target audience is teenagers and if it is, you do reach that audience as the characters presented are of that age group.

    4. I'd expect to find a film like yours at the cinema - y'know before the trailers start at the Picturehouse and they play a short film in association with "Virgin Media Shorts"? - it matches that criteria (that's a good thing btw).

    5. Generally the performances are fine, but sometimes it comes across as a little forced and unrealistic. Saying that, it's probably just me being picky & it isn't something that requires loads of method acting and embodying Stanislavski techniques! So yeah, it's good! The crying was done very well!

    6. Yes, the message of despair is brought across clearly - primarily due to the crying.

Well done ladies - it's really good!!!

  3. 1. What I liked about your film was the flashbacks that were good at times and the variety of shots that you used.

    2. I think that you need to make all the flashbacks the same effects so the audience can easily tell they are flashbacks. Also, the lighting in the room is quite dim.

    3. I think the target audience are teenagers and people who have lost someone important and dear to them.

    4. I think your film would be shown at the film festival or perhaps in the cinema when they put 5-minute short film on because the actual film starts.

    5. I thought the acting of the actresses could be improved. It seemed like there was no emotion into it but the crying scene was really good.

    6. The message of despair was bought across clearly.
