Audience feedback and Final Screening

  • What did you think was particularly successful about our film?
  • What would you change?
  • Who do you think the target audience is? Do you think we are reaching out target audience? Please comment.
  • Where do you think you would find a film like ours? (websites, cinema, TV, etc)
  • What do you about the performance of both actresses?
  • Do you think that the message of despair is brought across clearly?

Above is the version of our short film which we showed at our second screening. This version has the addition of the credits, title, music, voiceovers, effects and is also shorter in length than our original rough cut. We decided not to include our old iFlooky logo (from our AS opening) because we felt it didn't suit the sombre mood of our film; alternatively we used a simple spaced out font to show the seriousness of our short film. The title 'Bringing Back Hope' was created using using the 'Light Rays' video effect which began at 0 at the start and then was increased to create the blurring effect and finally a fade video transition was used to flow into the next scene.
The music for both the beginning and ending of our short film was a choice between Gymnopedie No 1 (which we found was copyrighted by Erik Satie), Feather Waltz and Sovereign. All three pieces of music (found on Incompetech) are on piano which we thought suited our film well-the piano can be used as an emotional device to bring across sorrow. Feather Waltz is a very calming song, which we initially thought could be used for the transitions into the flashback scenes but decided it didn't quite suit. This left us with our final choice of Sovereign which we thought suited our film perfectly.

Bringing Back Hope - The Review

Written by Stella Anaman
Contributed to by Priscilla Amankwah and Tosin Oluyadi
Layout by Lorna Dean
Above is the review page for our short film Bringing Back Hope. Created entirely on Adobe InDesign

In the review we looked at existing reviews in order to emulate the layouts and the language used in film reviews. We knew we had to add shots from within the film that made it all the more interesting but didn't give away too much, and we decided to use our second poster as it displays the theme of despair quite well.

20.1.11

Editing film on final cut

Priscilla and I were editing the film on final cut, and our editing had improved a considerable amount, when a friend asked to look at a bit of it, she commented that the cuts were done quite well and that the continuity editing was done very well as it flowed.

while editing we did a lot more things than we had done last year, such as using a soft focus effect on the flashbacks and changing the hue and saturation to brighten or dimming particular scenes such as the flashbacks, so that they contrasted with the scenes with hope in her bedroom.

Problems that we came across while editing was that it was still way over the 5 minute limit and deciding on what to cut out, even though certain shots were really well done, we had to sift through what exactly was necessary.

This is a screenshot from the film of the sister (priscilla) crying, I decided to put a black and white effect, plus a soft effect to connote the sadness of the sister, and how this was in particular a dark moment for Hope, it is only at this point that the flashbacks are no longer bright, as this was the last time that Hope remembers seeing her.

Re-Shooting

We found that once all of our filming was finished and we uploaded it into Final Cut Express a lot of the shots were exceptionally dark and it was difficult to see what was going on clearly. We thought we could colour correct these scenes on Adobe After Effects but we in fact we found that this made them very noisy and pixelated . We decided that it would be better to just re-shoot these scenes.

Since the sister reassurance scene was also filmed in the bedroom which didn't have very good lighting we re-shot that scene as well.

Editing Our Footage and Our First Rough Cut

Now that we have all of the footage we are ready to move onto the editing process. We started editing on Final Cut Express and began selecting sections of each of the scenes to put into our short film.
First of all we edited all of the scenes with Hope sitting in her sister's room together and then slotted in all of the flashback scenes. Each flashback scene starts off with the sister's voiceover from her journal explaining what happened and how she felt at the time.
The flashback scenes include:
  - The birthday scene - The younger sister is waiting for Hope to meet her on the door step. Hope arrives late and gives her sister a necklace for her birthday.
  - The teddy bear scene - The sister shouts to Hope that she can't find her teddy bear and Hope replies that she has no idea where it is even though she had hidden it.
  - The fight scene - The two sisters get into a confrontation and Hope slaps the sister causing her to cry.
 - The sister assurance scene - The sister has decided that she needs a break from Hope and so she leaves a diary entry for her and leaves. Unfortunately there is an accident and the sister doesn't make it to come back to her sister and family.

Above is our first rough cut of Bringing Back Hope

This rough cut was shown at our first screening. This version of the film doesn't have credits, title, music  effects the key feature being the voiceovers-all of these elements will be in the final version.

Choosing our poster design

A brainstorm showing out thoughts and ideas around our short film's poster
by Tosin Oluyadi

by Lorna Dean

We decided on two posters, for the promotion of our film. We picked a design from both Tosin and Lorna. The reason why we picked two poster designs was to have it promoted in different places such as bus stops and adverts for online promotion.

This is our main final poster for Bringing Back Hope. It was all designed on photoshop.
The way we designed the photograph was first, we took a couple of photographs of priscilla holding onto the journal. After that we picked 3 photos that we would definitely would like to use and picked 1 from all of them.

Above is our second final poster. It was compiled together using a small collection of photographs (table, necklace, journal, Hope holding teddy bear and finally the bedroom background) which were imposed together on Photoshop. The use of blue in this poster connotes the sadness and coldness that Hope is feeling. Although the bright purple and yellow is used to show a hint of happy times and underlying hope.

Existing Poster Analysis

'Speak' is an independent film created in 2004 by by Speak Film Inc. directed by Jessica Sharzer and distributed by Showtime Networks (USA). We thought this film related to our short film because it is also a serious teen drama about a young girl who feel she has no one to talk to; much like the younger sister in our short film who passes away.
The film is about thirteen year old Melinda Sordino who has a traumatic experience during summer break and feels that she can't tell anyone about it. In high school she is shunned for being the 'girl who called the cops' at a senior party where the incident happened; when in fact she was trying to get the senior responsible for abusing her caught.

Bellow is our chosen poster analysis:

Naming Our Short Film

For our film there were a couple of names that Tosin came up with to suit the film.
  • What We Were....
  • Missing You
  • Bringing Back Hope
  • Once Upon A Time..
We decided to go with the name, Bringing Back Hope, as it rounded up the whole of the film. For bringing back hope, we meant it in the sense of bringing back the feeling of hope, as well as bringing back the character Hope from out of her despair and restoring her back to her former self. The name focuses on the character and reflects on despair in the sense that something has gone missing, which is hope, and the absence of Hope is despair, which is present in the film.

Missing you
We felt that the name missing you, was too bland to use and didn't sum up the film enough, besides the fact that it already hints at the fact that someone is gone, gives the audience too much of a clue into what it is about, whereas, bringing back hope, sums up the whole film and still provides a bit of mystery into the storyline.

What we were....
What we were... is too confusing and felt to sad to use, it made it seem that we were going to make a romance or a coming of age instead of a drama that focused on two sisters and also the resolve. It does heavily get the feeling of despair and was our second choice. The ellipses give the feeling of something incomplete.

Once upon a time....
Once upon a time felt too childish to use, however reflected the childish personality of the younger sister and how the story is told through her diary.

Filming

On our first day of filming it turned out that the daylight had escaped us before we had chance to film the birthday flashback scene. We decided instead that we would film the teddy bear flashback scene where the sister's teddy bear has gone missing and the Sister is blaming Hope.

Second day of filming - Sister assurance scene - We found this scene difficult to film because each section was going to be in a different location. For continuity we decided we were going to film this scene all in one location instead (Lorna's room)

Third day of filming - Re-shot sister assurance scene in 1 location (Lorna's room)
                              - Shot all scenes of Hope in her sister's bedroom all diary scenes (Lorna's room)

Fourth day of filming - Birthday scene outside of house (Stella's house)
                                - Sister leaving the house front door (Stella's house)
                                - Sister and Hope fight scene (Stella's house)

Presentation

Overall we felt that our presentation went well; in particular we thought that:
  • we had a fair amount of detail in our presentation
  • our information on Freytag's Pyramid was detailed and informing
What didn't go well:
  • Not enough information on narrative
  • Missed out some sections for example information on despair and the initial narrative for our film

To Improve we feel we could:
  • Include more information on existing products and codes and conventions of our chosen genre of Drama and our theme of Despair
  • A shooting schedule for when we are going to film
  • A conclusion of our film
  • Add more time, planning and consideration into producing presentations
  • Do more research into similar products relating to our chosen theme of despair and genre of drama

Pre-Storyboard Shotlists, Storyboards and Animatics

Pre- Storyboard Shot list
We began our storyboard process by creating a Pre-Storyboard Shotlist. This consists of our initial sequence of shots for our drama.
We mostly wrote down the main shots in the short film.

Storyboard

After this we drew up the storyboard.
Animatics
We drew out each shot on sticky notes and re-arranged them until we were happy with the result. We found out this process was quite long but detailed well the idea visually.

This meant that we saved some time and we weren't constantly rubbing out drawings because we had missed out a shot out.
We then put all of the sticky notes onto black paper and took pictures of each one individually.

They were then all put onto Final Cut Express and edited together along with recorded voice overs and soundtrack, though the music doesn't finalize the actual soundtrack we would use, but gives an idea of what we are going for in our film, so to help us visualize our final product.

We got the music from a site called incompetech, which offers royalty free music and arranges tracks by mood, genre and time period. So we would be definently using this in future.

Here is a picture of us doing the animatics on final cut express.

This is the final product of our animatics. Creating the animatics has helped us see where there could be problems in our film and we can now try and prevent them.

Script

Rough draft of script

We began to start up the script. With our film, and as a drama, we wanted to evoke more mood through the actions, emotions and music within it.

There isn't a lot of talking from the main girl Hope, and within the script she is often labelled as Girl, since at this point in time, we were still deciding on a name for her.

Casting

Girl (Hope)
Tosin Oluyadi:
Plays the main sister. She is devastated by her sister's loss. She often gives her sister a reality check about the way she behaves and tells her to grow up. She gets frustrated with her sisters behaviour because she finds her annoying. She is the more outspoken sister.
Initially, we named the young girl Jessica so that the audience can relate to the character more. If she were to be nameless the audience may feel disconnected. We have now decided to call her Hope due to the irony of the name contrasting to the theme of the short film (Despair).

Sister
Priscilla Amankwah:
Plays the sister that has died. She often feels her sister is unfair to her and doesn't understand her. She feels her sister always has a say in everything she does. She gets frustrated when her sister takes her things away. She expresses her feelings in a diary, rather than saying things outloud to her sister, but she would rather keep her feelings inside. She is the more shy sister.
Deep down inside the two sisters have a strong sibling relationship and they stick by each other in the end.
We have not given the sister a name because we do not want the audience to get too attached to her character because the viewers attention will be drawn away from the main character.

Location

Below are some possible locations where we could shoot our film

Lorna's Room - The Young Girl's Bedroom
Ideally, we want to find a room that will not let in too much light and also, is not brightly coloured, as this will interfere with our chosen theme of despair.
We are going to use this room because we believe it suits our film well. It is a large room and althought in the daylight it is ver ybright ; we are going to film in the evening around 5 or 6 when it gets dark to create a darker atmosphere for our film.

This is the birthday scene that we will be filming outside stella's house.

The stairs that we would be shooting from for the voiceovers of the two
adults as well as for the teddy bear scene.#

This is the kitchen where we will be shooting, it is nice and small and perfect
for the scene.

As the kitchen isn't directly opposite the stairs we decided to
use the living room instead of the kitchen first for oneof the scenes, then
the girl goes into the kitchen, to go see the bear.

Props

The Sister's Teddy Bear
The sister could be seen as an immature person because she still owns a teddy bear and her sister believes she is too old to have one.

We have decided to use this teddy bear in our short film. We feel it has a neutral face and it would suit our film.

This teddy could be seen as the most feminine >
bear out of all of them. It's small, has a soft and fluffy texture to it and has tiny eyes which adds to it's 'cuteness'.

Necklace (jewelery) -
Given to the girl by her sister. We could possibly use a bracelet rather than a necklace.

This bracelet would be suitable for a chirpy young girl who >
enjoys to make herself 'look pretty'. She would be more than
likely to wear makeup and wear clothes which are both bright and eye catching.

< This is our chosen necklace. We have chosen this necklace because we feel that the heart connotes the love between the two siblings.

This necklace is both simple and small which connotes that the two sisters do not need to give large and expensive gifts to show their sibling love for each other. >

Sound Devices

We visited the CLC and took part in a sound workshop where we learnt about a variety of equipment which we could use to record our sound for our short film. We also learnt about how to change the volume of voices and music on Final Cut Express. Recording in different places can make a huge difference to the quality of the sound that is recorded. If a voice is being recorded in a large empty room the sound will echo and distort due to the sound waves bouncing off of the walls.

Possible devices we could use within our short film are:
- Radio Mic UHF Synthesized transmitter and UHF Synthesized Diversity Tuner
The transmitter sends radio waves on it's own channel to the diversity tuner so the sound can be picked up and recorded. A clip-on mic is attached to the transmitter so the voice of the wearer is clear and crisp. This equipment has a vast range so people far away can be heard before they are even in shot. More than one clip-on mic can be used and be recorded at one time.

- Rode Boom and Windjammer
Windjammer

The boom is held up above the action and actors and helps create a crisper sound to be recorded. The windjammer is used to lower the background noise and wind so that only what needs to be heard will be heard clearly without interference.

- Merantz Professional Solid State Recorder
Allows easy playback of recordings from the device. Both clip-on mics and headphones can be plugged in. The volume of a recording can be raised and lowered using the inner and outer dials of the Manratz; this is a useful feature which can lower the need for editing later on.

- Sennheiser Mic
This mic is hand held and picks up all background noise as well as the movement of the person who is holding  it. This device would be more suitable for interviews in a documentary than a drama.

- Edirol by Roland Mp3 Recorder R-09
Much like the Marantz this device records and plays back what has been recorded. Both clip-on mics and headphones can be attached to this device. We found that this recording device was of a lower quality than the Marantz and so we have decided not to use it.

Our Decision
We have decided that we are going to use a Boom with a Windjammer, a Marantz and a clip-on mic to record our sound in our short film. We will use the Boom and Windjammer to help give us a crisper sound while we shoot our flashback scenes which will be outside. The Marantz will be used along with the clip-on mic throughout the whole of our short film which is shot mainly within one room. The Marantz will allow us to  play back the sound and decide whether we will record it again or not.
Our voiceovers could be recorded in a small room with either a clip-on mic or a handheld mic. Due to the handheld mic recording all the rustling sounds as we move we are going to use the clip-on mic. The clip-on mic records some rustling but as much as the handheld.

Update

We have decided to use a Handy Recorder H2 to record our sound. It can be used for the voiceovers easily and should give a good quality recording.
We are no longer going to use the boom and windjammer, Marantz or clip-on-mic because we only have a few shots outside and the camera should be able to give us all we need since there isn't much talking in those scenes.

Target Audience and Questionnaire

Moodboard About Teenagers and young people between 15 and 25
By Lorna
We have decided that our target audience is going to be:
- Teenage girls and young people between the age of 15 and 25.
- People who have lost someone they love and feel like they can relate to the film
- People who feel trapped or isolated in a situation and can't seem to find a way out but there is always a way
- Young people often turn to other things when they are depressed such as smoking, drinking and drugs which all have a negative affect on themselves.

Questionnaire
We created a questionnaire and distributed it to young men and women around our school to help us. We decided not to restrict our questionnaire to just women because we wanted to see what the men's choices would be and whether we should use two men who are bothers rather than two women who are sisters. The results of the questionnaire have told us that a lot of people have got siblings that they are very close to. From this we have decided to stay with the idea of the story being based around a young girl who has lost her sister and is looking back in her sister's eyes through her journal.
The question about personal possessions could have been a lot clearer if we had given specific options such as music box, digital camera, teddy bear and asked which possession would have been more precious to them. Most of the people we distributed the questionnaire to thought that storyline and emotion were the features that attract them to dramas and are very important.

Changes to Our Narrative

The plot revolves around a story of a girl who overcomes despair after losing her best friend. The film deals with bereavement, death and acceptance.

Theme: Despair
Genre: Drama

Narrative: The story opens with a girl dressed in black clothes, she is sitting on a bed in a room, staring at the floor. It is quite evident that she is getting ready to go to a funeral. She begins to walk up and down in her room and begins to get bored and opens up the drawer, as she is looking through the drawer she spots a journal, and begins to read it, she skims through the first through pages and goes to an entry talking about her and her sister. This entry talks about the present the sister got for her birthday from her.

This then leads to a flashback of the time, the sister gave her sister her necklace for her birthday. Constantly throughout the rest of the film we are shown precious moments between the two sisters, the girl reaches a more recent entry of when the sister and her fought, just before her death. In the entry the sister is complaining about how she hated her sister for what happened and this puts the girl back in a mood of despair again, as she feels that the situation can never be reconciled. In rage she throws down the journal and it lands on the last journal entry, the girl goes to read it and the sister is saying sorry in it and gives her a sense of hope in the entry.

The girl is finally able to accept the death of her sister and feels reconciled. In the last shot she is seen leaving her room, and closing the door behind her.

The reason why we changed the friend to the sister, is because we felt it would have more of an emotional impact on the audience. The majority of the audience should have siblings, so straight away they have something to relate to and to put the main character in the situation of the death of her sibling, automatically makes the audience feel empathetic and attached to her as they begin to imagine themselves in the same situation.

We decided on the girl also to wear black formal clothes, to hint that she is getting ready to go to a funeral, so the idea of her sisters death, comes out straight away.

We kept the low lit room as it represents the girl's current state of mind and the condition of the room such as it being in a mess can be how she feels physically, with little light coming in to represent a dim sense of hope within her.

Instead of objects, we decided to just keep the journal and have the girl flick through the entries of different moments herself and her sister shared. Some objects such as the teddy bear and necklace would be kept for in the flashbacks, as things the sisters exchanged between themselves.

The final shot of her leaving the room and closing the door, represents a closure within herself and that she is finally leaving that state of mind and accepting the situation.

First narrative of our short film

Our idea was to tell the story of a girl who overcomes despair after losing her best friend.

The story was to be told through a voice over of each possession which she had been given/relates to her best friend who has died recently. Each voice over would have a different voice as it is the objects themselves telling the story of the two best friends.

The first few shots would be in a small dark bedroom with low key lighting. There may be a gap in the curtains, allowing a bit of sunlight in to show, there is a glimpse of hope within the  girl's. The reason why we chose a low lit room and that it should be small is to represent the girl's present condition.

The girl's parents can be heard having a conversation from downstairs, talking about their daughter and how she hasn't come out of her room in days as well as their worry about how she is coping with the situation.

The girl would be lying on the floor with objects scattered across the floor and a mobile in her hand. This would be shown in a close up of her face and then slowly zoom out into a mid shot shot from the floor of her lying down trying to call someone, with a name presumably her friends name on the screen. The girl would then slide the phone under bed and she gets up and tries to pick up the phone.

Instead she places her hand on an object which then tells it's story to the audience. The objects we are thinking of using are a necklace, teddy bear, journal, digital camera and music box. Each object has a significance to the young girl's past with her friend. Short flashes would playback when she is holding the possession and thinking back to that particular time. Throughout flashes the young girl's moods are constantly changing as she is confronting her own feelings.

The last object which she looks at would be the journal, reading from it she is saddened and in frustration ends up which throwing the journal. The journal lands open with a note falling out from her best friend.
The note encourages the friend and tells her to carry on with life, through the note there is a sense of reconciliation.

This could be highlighted by a ray of light from the window hitting the girl to signify the hope the young girl has now found, with her opening the window and finally leaving the room.

When Five Fell - WongFu Productions
This is our initial inspiration for our short film. Wongfu Productions have used a collection of objects and a voice over to tell the story of the young girl we may do something similar in our own short film.
